Fruits | The Charm of the Alpine Strawberry | Alpine Strawberries: White : Alpine Strawberry Red
Other than color, the red Alpine strawberry plant differs from its white relative in that it produces no runners. This makes the red Alpine an excellent choice for container growing, indoors or out. Like the white Alpine strawberry plant, the red Alpine produces delectable berries throughout the growing season.
When grown either as a hanging plant, the red Alpine makes a delightful addition to your deck, porch, or patio.
Besides luxuriant foliage and the delicate white flowers, a hanging Alpine strawberry produces fruit, just like that grown in your garden patch. Moreover, like the strawberries in your home garden, with proper strawberry care, a hanging strawberry plant will bloom and produce fruit for three to four years.
Because the strawberry is a vine, it is already adapted to being suspended. In addition, your hanging strawberry will be far from the ground where perennial weeds and nematodes in the soil can harbor fungal and viral infections that are the nemesis of many garden strawberry beds.
Another advantage to growing the Alpine strawberry as a hanging plant is that you can easily give your plant the strawberry care it needs since you are in complete control of irrigation, soil composition, and fertilization. You can make sure that rain or shine, drought or deluge, your strawberry plant stays moist without being flooded. You can also ensure that soil stays loose and fertile and finally, a strong benefit of the hanging strawberry is no weeds!
Small strawberry pots are also suited for hanging. In selecting companion plants for a strawberry pot, select other plants such as small herbs (marjoram, basil, parsley to suggest a few) or flowers (nasturtium, pansies, violas - all edible!) that are typically shallow rooted like the strawberry and not invasive. Your strawberry plant will thrive either spilling its bright red berries from the small cup-shaped side holes or as the center attraction at the top of the pot.
